Debate Question - Sneaky Christians

Post by Alluveal » Fri Dec 17, 2010 10:43 am

So, today on campus, a guy was passing out "support bags" for final's week. My friend and I took one each, open it up to see: a bottle of water, a granola bar, some candy and a bunch of religious literature about sex and how saying no is the Christian thing to do (almost Jack Chick-esque, but less full of DAMNATION rhetoric). There was also a CD of "how to accept Jesus" inside as well.

We both kept everything except for the religious materials which we tossed into a nearby garbage can. Judging from how full the can was, most people were doing the same.

Now, for me it's just a bit creepy and weird and because of that I looked at the material inside (for sheer entertainment purposes), then made a bad joke to my friend (Jewish) that she was drinking Jesus water now.

What do you all think about this tactic? I didn't see anyone get offended, but part of me wondered if some people might. College students in general are in need of lots of things (like food, snacks, etc). But, are these "gifts" with strings attached? Or, is it just good "marketing?"

Is it a group preying on the vulnerable (college students who are more vulnerable mentally and physically during finals week) in hopes of converting?

Thoughts?

I think college is a time for people to think for themselves and that the bags were just good marketing. Of course it's sneaky but I guess I don't see what the big deal is.

Why not be up front, though? "Donated by X_Christian Organization."

I still would have taken it and probably tossed the literature out.

Nah, no big deal. Most advertising companies are far, far more sneaky than that.

I think you are going to hell for not recycling the CD and paper from the literature. Buddy Jesus hates wasters.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Did Jesus manipulate people into following him?

A famous businessman once said that "a good deal sells itself."
