I blame the slow roll out of FiOS.

The big ISPs not only cherry pick their choice deployments, they sue any (usually rural) local government that wants to build their own network. And the FCC, which has recently given hundreds of millions of dollars to these same ISPs to map out broadband and tell us everything's fine has set a sky-high standard of 4 megabits to the masses by 2012 (?).

Even Australia, who plans to basically censor all political dissent has an ambitious broadband buildout plan.

I thought the new administration would be less beholden to the big ISPs and to Hollywood, but it's the status quo. Meanwhile we become less and less competitive in technology.

Australia is planning a government sponsored 100 Mbps fiber optic network to 93% of all households. We're stuck paying our ISPs to analyze the situation and tell us everything is perfect as it is, and that there's plenty of competition.

Be interesting to see what comes of the proposed national broadband network out here. The opposition has promised to scrap the plan and invest the $40b somewhere else if they get voted in on 8/21. I kinda like the idea though - it's taking the "last mile" from the local monopoly holder and giving a level playing field for all the ISPs.

Of course, broadband out here has monthly limits usually measured in tens of gigabytes, which pretty much sucks.

On the original topic, the US is doing pretty well given their population density and sales model (tiered speed limits).

The US has more than 2.5 times the broadband subscribers as Japan at 32 million subscribers. Germany (25M), France (20M), and the UK (18M) round out the top 5 countries surveyed.

We are stressing our ISP's a lot more than other countries.

I'd disagree there. Total subs is meaningless given the population of the US is so much larger and therefore the ISPs themselves are much larger and have more cash on hand to pay for better infrastructure.

Oh, I highly doubt rural America will ever get FiOS. If anything they'll rely on some twisted form of WiMAX or Cell technology to drive their networks.

I'm mainly pushing for a faster rollout because we have FiOS in Cincinnati, but its mainly in downtown/east side areas. I have no clue when its going to hit my side of town or my neighborhood, but I really want a 30/30 connection.
